PPE Buying Mistakes: MSA Safety V-Gard®, Work Boots, and Fire Extinguisher Questions

Take this with a grain of salt: I’m not a safety engineer. I’m the person who orders the PPE, writes the PO, and keeps a mental list of expensive lessons. Seven years in, I’ve personally made—and documented—11 significant ordering mistakes, totaling roughly $15,000 in wasted budget. This FAQ is the checklist I wish I’d had before the first one.

1. Is MSA Safety the brand behind the V-Gard® hard hat?

Yes. MSA Safety—known as “The Safety Company”—makes the V-Gard® line. According to MSA Safety’s corporate website, the company traces back to 1914. The V-Gard? I want to say it’s been around since the early 1960s, but don’t quote me on the exact year.

What matters more than the year is that the V-Gard is not one single helmet. There are cap-style and full-brim versions, different suspensions, and different sizes. The version you see on a lot of crews is the V-Gard with a ratchet suspension. The one that ends up in storage is the one you ordered without checking what your crew needs.

2. Where is MSA Safety headquarters?

According to MSA Safety’s official site, the headquarters is at 1000 Cranberry Woods Drive, Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, about 30 minutes north of Pittsburgh.

Why does that matter? Because when you need a spec sheet or legacy documentation, calling headquarters directly can be faster than digging through a distributor’s website. I’ve done it twice. The first time I reached a real person in about 15 minutes. The second time I left a voicemail. It’s still better than guessing.

3. Is the MSA Safety V-Gard® worth paying more for?

In my opinion, yes—for us. Not because it’s the most exotic helmet on the market. Because the system is consistent. Suspension components are easy to source, accessories are available, and the shell holds up in hot, dirty environments.

There’s also the perception issue. In 2021, a client’s safety rep looked at our crew’s mismatched helmets and asked, “You’re wearing those?” Nobody was injured. Nothing was out-of-compliance by the letter of the spec, but the impression was bad. After we switched to V-Gard® helmets with clean shells and proper suspension, the same rep approached the next audit differently. That’s not a safety rating—it’s a brand signal.

No, you don’t need a $60 helmet to meet the standard. But the difference between a decent helmet and a questionable one is, in my opinion, the wrong place to cut corners.

4. Are square toe work boots safer than round toe?

No. “Square toe” is a shape, not a rating. What matters is whether the boot is marked as meeting ASTM F2413-18 for impact and compression. The marking is usually on the tongue or inside the shaft. If it’s not there, it’s not a safety toe.

A square toe boot can be more comfortable because it gives your toes room. But if someone says they bought square toe work boots because they’re “safer,” that’s not how it works. I made this mistake—or rather, I trusted a supplier’s product description instead of the label. The boots fit fine. They weren’t rated for impact. We caught it before they went into the field, but only because somebody read the tag.

Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), advertising claims have to be truthful and not misleading. That applies to the sales page. It doesn’t replace the physical label.

5. Are Milwaukee work boots worth the price?

I have mixed feelings here. On one hand, the comfort features in Milwaukee work boots are legitimately good. I know a superintendent who swears by them. On the other hand, you can pay for the name if you don’t check what you’re actually getting.

The brand on your boot does not absorb impact. The ASTM mark does. If you compare Milwaukee work boots against a lesser-known brand with the same rating, the right answer might not be the higher-priced one. For us, the real question was: are we paying for better protection or better marketing?

That’s not a criticism of Milwaukee. I own their tools. It’s a reminder that the rating matters more than the logo.

6. Where to buy a fire extinguisher?

It depends on what you need it for. If you need one for a commercial or industrial building, buy from a licensed fire equipment distributor. They can supply, mount, tag, and service the extinguisher, and they know local inspection expectations. If the fire marshal sees an expired tag, the conversation starts with “Where did you get this?”—trust me, you don’t want that conversation.

For a home unit, a hardware store or big-box retailer is fine. Just don’t buy one and forget about it for ten years. Check the gauge. I’m not going to list the specific service intervals from memory—I’d probably get one of them wrong. That’s exactly why I use a licensed distributor for our commercial units.

Oh, and if you’re ordering online, check where it ships from and whether it ships charged. I didn’t expect that to delay our first batch by three days.

7. What’s the biggest ordering mistake you’ve documented?

The biggest failure wasn’t a dramatic product failure. It was a mismatch between what I ordered and what arrived. In 2022, I ordered 140 V-Gard® helmets for a shutdown crew. I specified the right model but the wrong suspension. Actually, let me correct myself: I specified the cap style but never confirmed whether the crew needed pin-lock or ratchet. We didn’t catch it until the day before the crew flew in. $3,100 with shipping, straight to storage, plus two nights of scrambling.

That’s when I started a verification checklist. In the past 18 months, we’ve caught 43 potential errors using that list. It sounds like the process is failing. It’s doing the opposite—that’s what it’s supposed to catch. The cost of verifying a model number is four minutes. The cost of being wrong is the phone call I made to a safety manager at 6 p.m. on a Friday.

This approach worked for us, but we’re a mid-size contractor with a warehouse and someone who owns the inventory. If you’re a small crew, you don’t need a 20-step process. The part that applies to everyone: check the label, check the rating, and know where to call when something doesn’t add up.
