A False Fire Alarm Forced Us to Fix Our Safety Procurement—Here’s What I Learned

Last October, the fire alarm in Building 2 went off at 2:30 on a Tuesday. No smoke, no heat, just the siren. Everyone stood in the parking lot for twenty minutes while our maintenance tech traced the trouble to a smoke detector with a dying 9v battery for smoke detector that had degraded enough to send a false signal. Background: The real cost of buying piecemeal

We're a mid-size industrial contractor—about 140 people, with crews doing maintenance work at oil and gas facilities. I manage procurement. In 2023, I audited our spending and found that we'd spent $180,000 on PPE and safety equipment across 11 different vendors. That was the wake-up call.
