It was 7:15 on a Monday morning when my phone rang. The operations manager on the other end skipped the greeting entirely:

That call isn't unusual in my line of work. For over a decade, I've coordinated safety equipment for industrial facilities, and most urgent calls don't start with something dramatic. They start with a chirp that's been ignored for weeks, a sign that fell off during a repaint, or a detector no one can remember installing. Audits have a way of turning small oversights into headline items.
The beeping detector in that plant wasn't a low battery. It was 11 years old and had reached the end of its service life. While we were on site, we found a second problem: a freshly charged extinguisher in the warehouse with no sign above it. The paint crew had taken the sign down, and nobody remounted it. Two separate issues. One root cause — nobody had walked the building with a checklist lately.

Smoke detectors don't look expired. They don't change color or flash a warning message. The only reliable way to know how old they are is to remove them from their mounting base and read the date of manufacture printed on the back.
According to NFPA 72, the National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, self-contained smoke alarms should be replaced no later than 10 years from their date of manufacture. Hardwiring doesn't change that. A unit with electrical power still has a sensor that degrades over time.
When someone asks about a “10-year smoke detector,” they're usually describing an alarm with a sealed, non-replaceable battery. That design removes the “take the battery out and leave it out” failure mode. But the sensor still ages, and the 10-year limit still applies.
To be precise, NFPA 72's 10-year replacement rule applies to smoke alarms — the self-contained devices you see in break rooms, offices, and residential settings. If your facility has a full fire alarm system tied to a control panel, those system detectors follow different listing and maintenance requirements. That's where I hand you to a factory-trained technician. What I can tell you from the operations side is this: if a self-contained unit's date code is missing or past the limit, replace it. Full stop.
I'll admit I skipped that date check for years. I assumed a detector that looked fine was fine. Then I helped a facility prepare for an audit, the inspector asked for documentation, and nobody had a single install date on file. That was the moment I started checking manufacture dates on every walkthrough.

A sign can point to an extinguisher, but the extinguisher still has to work. I give each unit 30 seconds and check five things:
- Pressure gauge (if the unit has one) is in the green zone.
- Safety pin and tamper seal are intact.
- No visible dents, corrosion, or leaks.
- A service tag shows the annual maintenance check by a certified technician.
- The mounting bracket is secure and the unit is within comfortable reach.
I'm not a fire protection engineer, so I'm not going to quote the exact code sections your local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) will use to judge your site. That varies. In my experience, though, these five checks catch the majority of problems I've seen flagged on audit day.
Step 5: Source Replacement Equipment Before You're Desperate
Once you know what needs replacing, the next question is where it's coming from. This is where good facilities make their most expensive mistake.
When the clock is ticking, the cheapest detector on a marketplace listing looks attractive. I understand why. But in my experience, the cheapest option is usually the least economical one. A $10 alarm that fails in six months costs more once you add the technician's return trip, a nuisance investigation, or an inspector asking where the certification documentation is. Those hidden costs always outweigh the money you saved on the unit itself.

Common Mistakes That Still Show Up on Audit Day
I keep seeing the same patterns, even in facilities that genuinely care about safety:
- Treating every chirp as a battery issue. Sometimes it is. Sometimes it's end-of-life. Read the date code and find out.
- Repainting and forgetting to remount signs. Put sign remounting into the scope of every paint project. Otherwise, it won't happen.
- Blocking extinguisher access “temporarily.” That pallet of inventory tends to stay for months. Walk the route, not just the visual line of sight.
- Never asking staff to find an extinguisher. Ask three employees to show you the nearest unit. If they walk right past it, you have a training gap.
- Waiting until the last week to order anything. That's how facilities end up with unverified equipment and no documentation — and a previously clean record gets a black mark.
Most fire safety audit failures aren't caused by one dramatic issue. They're caused by the alarm that outlived its service date, the sign that came down in May, and the extinguisher that's been sitting behind boxes since June. The fix is to walk your facility with a checklist before an inspector does. An afternoon with this list costs a lot less than the corrective action plan that follows a failed audit.
