It started with a phone call in April last year, and it nearly ended with a fence company's workshop going up in flames.
I'm a quality and brand compliance manager in the industrial safety space. - Industrial safety distributors. Companies that supply MSA Safety Inc. products and similar gear usually have a line on fire equipment vendors. This is a solid option because you can bundle PPE purchasing and fire safety service through people who understand workplace compliance.
- Local fire equipment service companies. This is my recommendation. They sell commercial-grade extinguishers, mount them properly, and—crucially—can set up an annual maintenance contract. They're also the people who issue the dated tags after each service.
Pricing as of January 2025 (based on quotes I collected for Ray and a few other clients): a commercial 5-pound ABC dry chemical extinguisher runs about $45 to $90. Annual maintenance check: $25 to $60 per unit. Monthly inspection: $0, assuming you do it yourself with a tag stamp. The total annual cost for a three-extinguisher workshop is around $150, including the service contract.
Compare that to one fire call, one insurance deductible, or one downtime week. The math is not close.

And when you buy new safety gear—extinguishers, helmets, anything—buy from someone who can also service it and keep the certification current.
As of February 2025, NFPA 10 still requires monthly visual inspections and annual maintenance checks for portable fire extinguishers, and OSHA backs that up under 29 CFR 1910.157. Standards can change, so verify current requirements at nfpa.org and osha.gov. But the core habit doesn't change: verify your equipment before you need it, not after.
Ray now runs one of the better-organized small workshops I've seen. The extinguishers are mounted, tagged, and clear of obstruction. The V-Gard helmets hang on a rack by the door. And the dry-erase board still lists the 12-point check every single month. That's not exciting. But it's exactly why Ray's story is one I tell, and why the shop is still standing.
