Five days a week, I coordinate safety equipment orders for industrial facilities. When a plant manager calls at 4 p.m. needing 60 hard hats before a Monday audit, I am the person who finds them. - Find the tag. It is usually wire-tied to the handle.
- Look at the inspection date column. Start with the most recent date. If it is blank or more than a year old, call the service company.
- Look for initials. An inspection that is not initialed is an inspection that did not happen.
- Check the hydrostatic test status. This is the pressure test for the cylinder. If the date is overdue, pull the unit from service.
- Check the gauge and the safety pin. The tag can be perfect while the gauge is in the red and the pin is missing. Both are red flags.
Monthly visual inspections and annual maintenance are different records. The monthly column shows who looked at the unit. The annual record shows who checked the internal condition.
The tag tells you three things: last inspection, next due date, and hydrostatic status. In that order. If any of those columns are blank, treat the extinguisher as unserviceable.
6. What Happens When You Skip the Checklist
The most expensive failures in my career did not start at the moment of the emergency. They started with a skipped check. A smoke detector with a green blinking light but a dead battery.
